one start bit (must be 0), eight data bits, no parity bit and one stop bit (must be 1), is used, so up to 3,125 bytes per second can be sent.”

“It consists physically of a one-way (simplex) digital current loop electrical connection sending asynchronous serial communication data at 31,250 bits per second. This nonstandard transmission rate was chosen because it is an exact division of 1 MHz, the speed at which many early microprocessors operated” “MIDI messages are made up of 8-bit words, and are transmitted serially at a rate of 31.25 kbaud.

The real problem is trying to use 30 year old technology (MIDI) in the first place… plus its a serial protocol, so only a few kilobytes can go through the pipe at the same time As the old stage saying goes, “No one ever leaves the theater whistling the costumes.” Don’t let excessive attention to the occasional loose whisker interfere with your STYLE. The issue is real enough, but it doesn’t seem like some huge deal-breaker.

I’m one of those poor souls who LIKES to hear odd fret noise or an avant-garde-ish clam-ette. There’s more than one way to devise perceivable precision because it comes in several flavors. It inspired me enough to become the foundation of the beat, which I then built into a fairly meaty final song. For me, though… I found a nice freebie modular loop I most likely could not have created from scratch. I’ll allow for the reality and the technical need for some people making workable choices is what sincere synthesis is all about. I’m glad I DON’T need or want robotic timing as a regular thing. Its called “fingers on the keys.” 😛 I respectfully maintain that if you’re listening for jitter, you’re defocusing yourself somewhat, like someone who claims to hear a 2ms delay. Jambalaya 1.3.4 (Freak Show Enterprises)īevin notes that, “Many of today’s top choices for live plugin hosting introduce a non-neglectable amount of MIDI jitter that is bound to degrade your musical performance.”īevin’s finding are certain to raise some controversy – so see his post that discusses his testing for the details on his process and findings.īut sir, I AM in control. In Bevin’s testing, these apps had noticeable MIDI buffer jitter: Read why this is happening and which hosts to avoid in this article. Many popular plugin hosts introduce MIDI jitter at the final step, causing the timing to be subtly off during live performance.

Musicians using software instruments might be delivering sub-par performances and not even know why. And based on his testing, some DAWs are more prone to MIDI ‘jitter’ than others: I had a client that was concerned that he was losing some of his data when he saw his files losing a few megs, but all data is there, just that the kb reference is different on the two systems, so you get a different file size count.Reader Geert Bevin has been doing some testing of DAWs to learn more about their MIDI performance.

Download the 98MB to a 1024 system and it shows as 102MB again. If it's say a 102MB stereo file, on the 1024 system, it will show 98MB on the 1000 os system. This discrepancy crops up sometimes when people FTP me files. It also depends on the operating system, for example if it uses the 1,000 bit's = 1 kilobit, it will be slightly less than using the 1024 bit's = 1 kilobit system.

As per Brad's post that's stereo, you halve the kbps for mono streaming.

Double that you get 1611 for 16/44.1, triple that to 24 bits you get 2116.5kbps and quadruple that for 32 bit at 2882kbps. To stream stereo 32 bit with sampling rate of 44.1k, you need 2882kbps. It's mainly relative when the audio is being audibly heard or transfered for example over the net with audible streaming. Kpbs is just the rate that audio data has to stream to be heard in real time without buffering stops. The file was 32 bit float, so I got a new one in 24 bit.Īny explanation on why 1411 kbps is 16 bits, and 2116 but not 2822 kbps is 24 bits? Lagerfeldt wrote on Tue, 13 December 2005 06:08
